Free Highway Towing Programs at Risk

State and local transportation agencies across the country offer FREE highway towing services (i.e., Freeway Service Patrols), reducing the time motorists spend stuck in traffic, saving them gas, and lowering smog levels! These programs provide a valuable service to lower-income motorists who do not have roadside assistance membership programs.

Problem

The Problem

Once the (ACT) regulations go into effect, inventories of new trucks decline, soon reaching a point when no new tow trucks will be built or sold.

Towing companies contracted to provide highway services are required to drive late-model trucks. They may be subject to fines, penalties, and contract loss if they can’t replace older trucks with new, clean trucks.  As a result, small businesses and suppliers will have no choice but to lay off workers and potentially go out of business.
